The groups of Gilles Gasser and Ilaria Ciofini (both Chimie ParisTech, PSL University, CNRS, Institute of Chemistry for Life and Health Sciences) have just published an article in the prestigious Journal of the American Chemical Society.

This collaborative paper with scientists of the University of Zurich (Prof. Bernhard Spingler) and the University of Konstanz (Prof. Rainer Winter) reports the rational design of long-wavelength absorbing ruthenium(II) polypyridyl complexes as photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy. Thanks to this design, a very promising compound, which causes phototoxicity in the very low micromolar-to-nanomolar range at clinically relevant 595 nm, in mini-tumours could be unveiled. In vivo studies are currently underway. Overall, the prediction of the photophysical properties of potential photosensitizers using TD-DFT enables a directed search for efficient compounds, opening new avenues in this field of research.

This work was mainly carried out in Chimie ParisTech by Dr. Johannes Karges, Dr. Franz Heinemann, Marta Jakubaszek, Dr. Federica Maschietto, Chloé Subecz, Mazzarine Dotou, and Dr. Robin Vinck. Congratulations.
