Former PhD student, Dr. Johannes Karges, from the group of Gilles Gasser at Chimie ParisTech – PSL, PSL University, CNRS, Institute of Chemistry for Life and Health Sciences, has been awarded with the 1st prize of the ENSCR-René Dabard Award.

This prize is considered among the most prestigious awards for PhD students in chemical sciences in France. The ENSCR-René Dabard Award is been given by the Fonds de Dotation de l’Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Chimie de Rennes (ENSCR) to outstanding scientists, who have contributed to the advancement of scientific knowledge, technological innovation and a better understanding of social and environmental issues. At the end of the year, an official ceremony to award your prize will be organized in Rennes.

Johannes undertook his undergraduate studies at the Philipps-University Marburg (Germany) with a stay at the Imperial College London (United Kingdom) thanks to a Deutschlandstipendium scholarship and an Erasmus scholarship. After his studies, he joined the group of Gilles Gasser to undertake a PhD thesis in medicinal inorganic chemistry. The focus of his PhD thesis was the development of novel metal complexes as photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy to treat challenging cancer tumours. This work was partly performed in the laboratories of Prof. Hui Chao at Sun Yat-Sen University (China). Johannes recently joined the group of Prof. Seth M. Cohen at the University of California, San Diego (USA) to undertake postdoctoral studies in bioinorganic chemistry.

We want to congratulate Johannes for this fantastic achievement.
