Phenomenon of capillarity? Why can some insects walk on water? How can we create water-repellent surfaces?
It is possible to express these surface effects in terms of energy (Helmholtz or Gibbs) and these quantities are related to the work required to vary the surface area of the system considered.
The purpose of this seminar is to illustrate the basics of surface tension with a focus on the liquid/vapour interface.
