he MaMa project is one of the projects selected by the European Research Council (ERC).  Led by Carlo Adamo, Professor of Theoretical Chemistry and Director of the Institute of Chemistry for Life and Health Sciences, this international recognition acknowledges the quality of his innovative research In Chemistry. He is the 6th ERC laureate hosted at Chimie ParisTech PSL since 2016.

What is the MaMa project?  Funded for a period of 5 years, it aims to develop integrated computational approaches for the description and rational design of innovative mechanochromic materials, i.e. materials whose optical properties change in response to an external mechanical stimulus. This mechanochromic response will be imparted to various elastomers, thermoplastic and thermoset polymers, either by introducing dispersed chromophores into the pristine matrix or by integrating the active molecule directly into the polymer chain. In addition to addressing fundamental questions concerning the precise description of the photophysics and photochemistry of molecules involved in the polymer matrix, the MaMa project will also address the description and modelling of various processes occurring under external mechanical stimulus over a wide range of length scales, from molecular dimensions to nanometers.  These mechanochromic polymers have a wide range of applications, such as mechano- and pressure sensors (to be used in several fields including robotic surgery), data storage devices and security plastics.  Within the MaMa project, collaborations are planned with Professors Andrea Pucci (University of Pisa, Italy), Giuseppe Milano (University of Naples, Italy) and Masahiro Ehara (Institute of Molecular Sciences, Japan).

Carlo Adamo is the director of i-CleHS, the joint institute of Chimie ParisTech PSL and the CNRS, composed of about 80 researchers working at the interface between chemistry, life sciences and health. He is a full professor of theoretical chemistry at Chimie ParisTech and has twice been appointed senior member of the Institut Universitaire de France (2011 and 2018). He has worked at several prestigious institutions, including the Italian Institute of Technology, Rice University, the University of Minnesota and CEA-Grenoble. He is the author of more than 430 scientific papers, which have been cited more than 35,000 times, and his h-index is 77.
