Blaise Delmotte from LadHyX, Polytechnique. The title of Blaise’s talk is: **  Nonlinear dynamics, collective motion and separation: dynamics of active and flexible particles in structured media **
and the abstract is below.
This talk combines microfluidic experiments, theory, and numerical simulations to investigate the dynamics of active particles and flexible particles moving through structured media. First, I will present a counterintuitive phenomenon: magnetic, torque-driven colloids—known to exhibit unusual collective behaviour at large scales—can become hydrodynamically trapped by obstacles only in the presence of Brownian motion. In contrast to its conventional role in facilitating escape from traps, thermal noise here is the only means for particles to access a hydrodynamic attractor. The second part focuses on the dynamics of flexible fibres in structured environments. Fibre–obstacle interactions give rise to distinct trajectories controlled by fibre size and elasticity, which can be exploited for particle separation and filtration. These dynamics are characterised by bifurcations between multiple attractors and by alternation between periodic and chaotic regimes.
