Former PhD student of the group Inorganic Chemical Team (ICB)–  Institute of Chemistry for Life and Health Sciences, Dr. Johannes Karges, has been selected as 1 out of 45 finalists for the Reaxys PhD award . The Reaxys PhD prize is considered as the world’s most prestigious award for PhD students in chemical sciences. The work is judged by an international committee for excellence in science with focus on the innovation, impact and importance to the world. Johannes is the only participant from France, who has reached the final phase of this prestigious award. The three winners of this competition will be given in October 2020.

Johannes undertook his undergraduate studies at the Philipps-University Marburg (Germany) with a stay at the Imperial College London (United Kingdom) thanks to a Deutschlandstipendium scholarship and an Erasmus scholarship. After his studies, he joined the group of Gilles Gasser to undertake a PhD thesis in medicinal inorganic chemistry. The focus of his PhD thesis was the development of novel metal complexes as photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy to treat challenging cancer tumours. This work was partly done in the lab of Prof. Hui Chao at Sun Yat-Sen University (China). Johannes recently joined the lab of Prof. Seth M. Cohen at the University of California, San Diego (USA) to undertake postdoctoral studies in bioinorganic chemistry.

We want to congratulate Johannes for this fantastic achievement.
