SUMMARY:Chemistry Graduate Program Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Contributions of continuous flow chemistry for the synthesis of drugs\nThere is growing interest in continuous flow chemistry within the organic chemist community. The advantages linked to the continuous flow but above all to the reactors used (high surface area to volume ratio) make it possible to overcome certain constraints encountered in batch chemistry: the use and / or the production of gas\, even at high pressure\, the use of very reactive intermediates\, or potentially dangerous reagents\, the control of the reaction parameters\, are facilitated. This seminar will focus more specifically on the contributions of continuous flow chemistry for the synthesis of drugs\, particularly in industry\, through several examples. \nCamille Lescot\, Doctor of Pharmacy\, obtained her PhD in organic chemistry in 2011 at the institute for the chemistry of natural substances (ICSN)\, under the supervision of Dr. Philippe Dauban. After 4 years of post-doctorate\, including 2 in Denmark in the laboratory of Troels Skrydstrup in Aarhus\, she obtained a position as researcher at CNRS\, in the SEISAD team of iCLeHS laboratory. Her current research focuses on the development of new synthesis methodologies in microfluidic systems for radiolabelling applications for imaging. \nClick here to join the seminar

DESCRIPTION:A Wonderland Full of Exoticism and Excitement à l’IPGG\nAggregation-Induced Emission (AIE): A Wonderland Full of Exoticism and Excitement–\, Institut Pierre-Gilles de Gennes Amphithépatre\, 6 rue Jean Calvin. 75005 Paris.  \nLuminescent molecule based materials are important members of advanced materials\, and have received considerable attention from both scientific and industrial communities. Traditional luminophores usually suffer from emission weakening or quenching in aggregated state and these phenomena which are notoriously known as aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) largely limit the application scope of them. In 2001\, we found that some propeller-like molecules showed luminescence behavior that was exactly opposite to the ACQ effect: the aggregate formation turned on their light emissions\, changing them from weak fluorogens into strong emitters. We termed this novel phenomenon as aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and called these luminescent molecules as AIEgens. Through systematic study it has been rationalized that the restriction of intramolecular motions (RIM) is highly responsible for the AIE effect\, and a great number of new AIEgens have been developed with emission colors covering the entire visible\, extending into UV and near-infrared (NIR) spectral region under the guidance of RIM mechanism. C. Cheong Professor of Science\, Chair Professor of Chemistry\, and Chair Professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST).  His research interests include macromolecular chemistry\, materials science and biomedical theranostics. Tang received B.S. and Ph.D. degrees from South China University of Technology and Kyoto University\, respectively.  He conducted postdoctoral research at University of Toronto.  He joined HKUST as an assistant professor in 1994 and was promoted to chair professor in 2008.  He was elected to the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) in 2009 and 2013\, respectively. Tang has published >1\,200 papers.  His publications have been cited >67\,000 times with an h-index of 129.  He has been listed by Thomson Reuters as a Highly Cited Researcher in both areas of Chemistry and Materials Science.  He received the State Natural Science Award (1st Class; 2017) from Chinese Government\, Scientific and Technological Progress Award from the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation (2017) and Senior Research Fellowship from the Croucher Foundation (2007).  He is now serving as Editor-in-Chief of Materials Chemistry Frontiers (RSC & CCS).

DESCRIPTION:La Fondation de la Maison de la Chimie organise le Jeudi 13 Juin 2019 un Colloque « Les Défis de la Chimie » sur le thème  « Hydrogène décarboné : enjeux et solutions ?». \n« En dépit d’annonces récurrentes quant à son utilisation comme vecteur énergétique universel\, l’hydrogène est resté cantonné\, jusqu’à une date récente\, à des applications certes importantes en tonnage\, mais restreintes: raffinage du pétrole\, synthèse de l’ammoniac et du méthanol. \nLe caractère prématuré de ces annonces résultait d’un développement insuffisant des technologies requises pour que l’hydrogène joue un rôle majeur dans la transition énergétique\, en s’appuyant sur sa qualité essentielle : sa « combustion » qui ne produit que de l’eau.\nLe plan National Hydrogène\, publié le 1er Juin dernier\, a donné une impulsion majeure au développement de l’hydrogène en France. Le but du présent colloque est de présenter l’état de l’art des technologies industrielles proposées ou en développement pour\, d’une part la production d’hydrogène décarboné\, d’autre part\, l’utilisation de cet hydrogène propre en substitution partielle ou totale des énergies fossiles dans leurs divers domaines d’intervention”. \nInscription au colloque
