SUMMARY:Séminaire Programme Gradué Chimie PSL
DESCRIPTION:Ziman hydrodynamic regime in sapphire by Yo Machida\nGakushuin University\, Tokyo\n\nWhen an ideal insulator is cooled\, four regimes of thermal conductivity are expected to emerge one after another. Two of these\, the Ziman and the Poiseuille\, are hydrodynamic regimes in which collision among phonons are mostly Normal. It has been difficult to observe them\, save for a few insulators with high levels of isotopic and chemical purity. In my talk\, I will present the results of thermal transport measurements\, covering four decades of temperatures between 0.1 K and 900 K\, and show that sapphire displays all four regimes\, despite its isotopic impurity. In the Ziman regime\, the thermal conductivity exponentially increases reaching an amplitude as large as 35\,000 W/Km\, which is comparable with the maximum thermal conductivity attained by isotopically pure diamond and silicon. I will discuss the robust Ziman regime in sapphire is attributed to by the proximity of optical and acoustic phonon modes\, as a consequence of the large number of atoms in the primitive cell.\n \nZoom link: https://espci.zoom.us/j/85473746367?pwd=zlJpYsgdNcLeEjfM5iB0uphbxYaM1r.1  \nID: 854 7374 6367\nPasscode: Edwin_Hall

SUMMARY:Séminaire Programme Gradué Chimie PSL
DESCRIPTION:Fyodor Kondrashov\, Fitness landscape or orthologous GFP genes. This seminar will take place at the seminar room of Gulliver C1.62  at 11:30. \nAbstract. \n\n\nHow genotypes are manifested into phenotypes\, an abstract concept colloquially known as a fitness landscape\, remains one of the most important unanswered questions in biology. However\, deep mutational scans – empirical assays of the fitness landscapes – are increasingly being used to shape our understanding of the complex nature of interaction of changes on the genetic level. In my talk I will outline what we have learned from our study of the empirical assays of different orthologues of the Green Fluorescent Protein. We find that the fitness peak associated with each orthologue is unique\, demonstrating different overall shape but also showing interactions between different amino acid sites. We have also been able to utilize these data and make generalized models of the fitness landscapes that are fairly accurate at genetic distances vastly beyond what has been assayed experimentally. The uniqueness of the shape of each fitness peak\, however\, leads to an inherent limitation of predicting the shape of one fitness peak based on the information contained in another fitness peak. To create better and more general models of fitness landscapes different empirical and theoretical approaches will be needed.

SUMMARY:Séminaire Programme Gradué Chimie PSL
DESCRIPTION: Antonio Garcia-Martin\, Thursday March 27 at 2:00 pm (Paris time)\, ESPCI\, Room Holweck\, building C\, 1st floor\, at LPEM in hybrid format:\n \nResonant nanostructures with broken symmetries By Antonio Garcia-Martin\, Instituto de Micro y Nanotecnología IMN-CNM\, Madrid\,  Spain.\n\nSymmetries can be regarded as pivotal when considering physical effects in light matter interactions.  Geometrical symmetries are easy to spot just by exploring the shape of the system under consideration. Others\, such as reciprocity or time reversal invariance are more subtle to identify. They appear particularly important when exploring scattering properties of resonant systems. Therefore\, when looking for novel\, or peculiar light-matter interactions systems with broken symmetries are attracting lots of attention. In the recent years the phenomenon of magneto-plasmonics revolved around the broken time reversal invariance upon the presence of an external\, static magnetic field\, giving rise to a plethora of different effects\, both involving enhancement of the magneto-optical effect via resonances or the control of resonances via the magneto-optical effect. [1\,2] Additionally\, systems without mirror symmetry\, more precisely those exhibiting a clear sense of twist or handedness are called chiral. Chirality is a concept that is embedded in our live\, since a large amount of biological molecules\, such as amino acids or proteins\, are chiral.[3] Normally the signature of handedness is weak\, and therefore resonant systems\, presenting chirality or interacting with the chiral species have been attracting lots of attention.[4]In this talk I will give an overview of\, what I personally consider\, the most relevant aspects of both chirality and magneto-optics\, putting forward some key elements to get simple rule of thumbs to understand the physics behind. Then I will connect those with a couple of our latest works on magneto-optical control of bound-states in the continuum in metasurfaces [5] and optical forces [6] chirality [7] and optomechanics [8\,9].\n \n[1] G.
