SUMMARY:Séminaire Programme Gradué Chimie PSL
DESCRIPTION:NMR over orders of magnitude of magnetic field… in each experiment\nProf. Dr. Fabien Ferrage\, Laboratoire des biomolecules (CNRS/SU/ENS)\nDepartment of Chemistry\, Ecole Normale Supérieure\, PSL University \nWhere: Préfabriqué 1 de Chimie ParisTech – PSL \nAbstract: High-resolution\, high-field NMR is a powerful tool to investigate matter\, with broad applications in chemistry\, material science\, structural biology and medical diagnostics. Further improvements of resolution and sensitivity come in part from the development of spectrometers operating at higher magnetic fields. This quest led to a series impressive technological achievements but represents a slow (on average ~5 T or 200 MHz per decade) and costly process. In parallel\, low-field NMR is a versatile technology\, available from the bench of chemists to the depth of oil wells. Low-field NMR provides great information on the structure of small molecules and the dynamics of complex media\, with limited sensitivity and resolution. Can we enhance the power of high-field NMR by combining it with low-field NMR? I will present the development of two technologies\, two-field NMR and high-resolution relaxometry\, which combine low- and variable-field NMR with high-field NMR. I will show applications to the determination of internal motions in proteins\, the analysis of interactions in biological fluids\, and sensitivity gains in two-dimensional NMR. \nFabien Ferrage did his undergraduate studies at the Ecole Normale Supérieure and Université Pierre et Marie Curie in Chemistry and Molecular Biophysics. He conducted his PhD under the supervision of Geoffrey Bodenhausen. He visited Art Palmer’s lab at Columbia University in 2001. He joined David Cowburn’s team at the New York Structural Biology Center in 2003 as a postdoc. He was appointed associate scientist at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) in 2005 in Geoffrey Bodenhausen’s group. Between 2007 and 2009\, he worked part-time at the New York Structural Biology Center\, collaborating with David Cowburn and Ranajeet Ghose. In 2010-1011\, he spent two years as a visiting scientist in the team of Aneel Aggarwal at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He was appointed associate professor at ENS in 2015 and research director at CNRS in 2016. \nHis main focus is on NMR methodology. For the last decade\, his research has been focused on method and instrument developments for the exploration of biomolecular dynamics by NMR relaxation. In 2011\, he received a Starting Grant from the European Research Council to study protein dynamics from low-magnetic field nuclear spin relaxation\, by a technique called high-resolution relaxometry. He introduced recently\, in a partnership with Bruker Biospin\, two-field NMR spectroscopy\, where moderately low and high magnetic fields are coupled in all experiments. Fabien Ferrage has authored ca. 60 articles in peer-reviewed journals\, 4 book chapters\, given over 50 invited talks\, communications and seminars\, and is the co-inventor of 4 patents

SUMMARY:Séminaire Programme Gradué Chimie PSL
DESCRIPTION:Physico-chemical characterization of complex colloidal systems\nLingsam Tea\, Forschungszentrum Juelich \nWhere : Amphi Holweck \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA colloid consist of a dispersion of small objects (from few nanometers to few micrometers) in a continuous phase. This broad definition include emulsions\, suspension\,  foams\, or gels. These systems are widely used in everyday life\, for example mayonnaise\, tooth paste\, chocolate mousse or styling gel. To use these systems in various applications\, the physico-chemical characterization is essential to better understand the relation between the chemistry (and the structure) and the macroscopic properties. Once the system characterized\, the properties can be fine-tuned (concentration\, pH\, salt concentration…) to match the requirements of the application.\nThe chemical structure can be determined by NMR\, and the hydrodynamic radius or the radius of gyration can be obtained by dynamic and static light scattering or neutron scattering\, depending of the size range. An another important parameter for polymer is the average molar mass which can be measured by light scattering and size exclusion chromatography. The rheological behavior of dilute to concentrated solutions can subsequently be characterized to determine if the system is a liquid\, a visco-elastic fluid or a solid. In the case of emulsions or suspensions\, destabilization as a function of time can be monitored by macroscopic observation\, confocal microscopy and analytical centrifugation (following the turbidity). Chemical modification of the polymer or particle can then be carried to confer or tune needed properties (stimuli responsive\, increase viscosity\, gelation…).\nCharacterization of different systems will be presented here. Hyaluronic acid hydrogels and LCST behavior of cellulose derivative will be described\, then water-in-water emulsions stabilization and characterization are investigated\, finally surface charged alcane-PEO micelles are studied.

DESCRIPTION:DNA DRIVE: a new technology for sustainable data storage\nStéphane Lemaire\, Sorbonne Université & Biomemory\n \nThe storage of digital data is a major challenge in our modern societies. Current digital media stored in data centers are fragile\, bulky and energy-intensive. The ongoing digital transformation of our societies requires a major disruption of our digital storage technologies. DNA data storage is an emerging technology that has the advantage of being stable for thousands of years\, extremely compact and energy-efficient. We are developing innovative concepts of DNA data storage based on domestication of biological systems. Our technology\, named DNA DRIVE\, and its proof of concept will be presented.\n \n***********************************************\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/83595816412?pwd=Q1VNbEdPcFMvNm9rSkpXRFRSZmlTUT09\nID de réunion : 835 9581 6412\nCode secret : 399084

SUMMARY:Séminaire Programme Gradué Chimie PSL
DESCRIPTION:Rheology and stress-induced dynamics of vitrimers\nFardin Khabaz\, Université d’Akron \nWhere : Amphithéâtre Holweck \nVitrimers are a class of polymers that bring together desirable mechanical properties of thermosets with the reprocessing of thermoplastics. This ability arises from the rearrangement of the vitrimer network via a bond shuffling mechanism while its cross-link density remains preserved. As the properties of the material are directly affected by the dynamics of the polymer chains\, it is critical to understand the link between the macroscopic behavior and the microscopic dynamic of the molecules. Molecular dynamics simulations can provide detailed molecular mechanisms of the system under macroscopic stress-induced deformations. We present a simulation methodology that utilizes coarse-grained molecular dynamics in conjunction with a Monte Carlo method to capture the bond exchange in vitrimers. Constant stress is applied to the system below its glass transition temperature while monitoring the strain (e.g.\, creep). Vitrimer shows accelerated dynamics under applied shear stress compared to that of thermoset. This different behavior between the two networks is reflected in the mean squared displacement of the crosslinker. In addition\, the motion of the crosslinker shows non-affine displacement\, resulting in regions of enhanced mobility (i.e.\, dynamics heterogeneities).

SUMMARY:Séminaire Programme Gradué Chimie PSL
DESCRIPTION:Statistical mechanics of large scales in turbulent flows\nStephan Fauve\, ENS\nIn many turbulent flows\, scales larger than the forcing scale display equipartition of energy. This familiar result of equilibrium statistical physics could look surprising in turbulent flows which are considered as a canonical example of an out of equilibrium dissipative system. After displaying several examples and discussing this result\, we show that concepts from equilibrium statistical physics can also be used to describe transitions between different turbulent regimes when a governing parameter is varied. More precisely\, the truncated Euler equation provides a tool to describe the dynamics of large scales and bifurcations that occur on a turbulent background. Finally\, we show how the dynamics of these large scale is related to 1/f type noise observed in many turbulent flows and elsewhere.\n********************************************\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/83595816412?pwd=Q1VNbEdPcFMvNm9rSkpXRFRSZmlTUT09\nID de réunion : 835 9581 6412\nCode secret : 399084

SUMMARY:Séminaire Programme Gradué Chimie PSL
DESCRIPTION:Writing in Water\nThomas Palberg\, Johannes-Gutenberg Universität\n \nWriting is an ancient cultural technique\, typically performed by leaving some trace in or on a solid surface. We here explore the possibilities of leaving well formed letters in a liquid medium. We employ micron sized particles suspended in water as ink and ion exchange resin beads gravitationally settled to a surface as pen. All dynamics of such systems are in the Low Reynolds number regime. Thus writing in water is an art affording skill and patience. We obtain lines or letters with high contrast and durability. Strategies for further developments are discussed shortly.\n********************************************\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/83595816412?pwd=Q1VNbEdPcFMvNm9rSkpXRFRSZmlTUT09\nID de réunion : 835 9581 6412\nCode secret : 399084
