SUMMARY:Séminaire Programme Gradué Chimie PSL
DESCRIPTION:Instabilities and geometry of growing tissues\nDoron Grossman\,\nCollège de France\n \nThe vertex model is a discrete often used to described cellular media\, where elastic energy depends on the difference of cells’ actual area and perimeter from a reference values. Cells are allowed to change neighbors via di fferent topological transition – including division\, apoptosis and so – called T1 transitions. We derive a complete\, coarse grained\, continuum model of the 2D vertex model\, applicable for di fferent underlying geometries\, and allows for analytical analysis. Using a geometric approach and out-of-equilibrium statistical mechanics\, we calculate both mechanical and dynamical instabilities within a tissue\, and their dependence on diff erent variables\, including activity\, and disorder. Most notably\, the tissue’s response depends on the existence of mechanical residual stresses on a cellular level. Thus\, even freely growing tissues may exhibit a growth instability depending on food consumption. Using this geometric model we can readily distinct between elasticity and plasticity in a growing\,  flowing\, tissue.\n \nThe seminar will be in hybrid format both in the Gulliver library and by zoom:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/83595816412?pwd=Q1VNbEdPcFMvNm9rSkpXRFRSZmlTUT09\nID de réunion : 835 9581 6412\nCode secret : 399084

SUMMARY:Séminaire Programme Gradué Chimie PSL
DESCRIPTION:Bad metal behavior from slow collective excitations \nBy Simone Fratini\,\nInstitut Néel\, Grenoble\n \nScattering of charge carriers by slow degrees of freedom can drive an electronic system away from normal transport behavior\, causing anomalously large resistivities. This phenomenon relies on the idea that the same localization corrections that make the conductivity vanish in disordered systems\, also partially survive when the random environment is dynamical\, if its fluctuations are sufficiently slow. \n \nThe ensuing « transient localization » of the charge carriers has been thoroughly studied during the last decade. It has been succesful in explaining the anomalous transport behavior of organic semiconductors\, where the role of a dynamical random environment is played by slow molecular vibrations. \n \nBecause it comes with large enhancements of the resistivity\, this general phenomenon is a natural candidate to explain anomalous transport behavior in metals. In this talk I shall review recent and ongoing work aimed at applying the concept of transient localization to correlated systems and other bad metals\, and discuss likely sources of dynamical disorder that could be at the origin of the phenomenon.  \n \nReferences:\nPseudogap metal induced by long-range Coulomb interactions \nK. SUMMARY:Séminaire Programme Gradué Chimie PSL
DESCRIPTION:Acoustic signature of hydrodynamics events\nJuliette Pierre (Institut Jean Le Rond D’Alembert) \nGas-liquid systems are ubiquitous in industrial\, food\, biological or geophysical contexts. The popping noise of a bursting bubble\, the crackle sounds of ageing foams\, the whistling of nucleating water\, the fizzing of champagne\, the drumming of rain and the thud of degassing volcano magmas evidence the radiation of sound by these violent interfacial hydrodynamic events. \nSuch events evolve according to various processes occurring at several different length scales and over several different time scales. \nIn many of these out-of-equilibrium systems\, conventional fast optical imaging method does not follow very high dynamics or get through opaque samples. \nIn this presentation I will present our recent investigations about the spatio-temporal acoustical signature of violent hydrodynamic events. By combining the use of acoustic sensors\, theoretical and numerical modeling\, we aim to monitor and characterise these violent events and elucidate the physical mechanisms at play in their existence and their evolution. \n \nRemote connection details\n\n\n\n\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/83595816412?pwd=Q1VNbEdPcFMvNm9rSkpXRFRSZmlTUT09\nID de réunion : 835 9581 6412\nCode secret : 399084

SUMMARY:Séminaire Programme Gradué Chimie PSL
DESCRIPTION:Surface tension and the strain-dependent topography of soft solids\n\n\nNicolas Bain\, ETH Zurich\n\n\n\nAbstract: Despite its importance in any adhesion and wetting phenomena\, there is a fundamental property that is not yet understood in soft solids: surface elasticity. Also called the Shuttleworth effect\, surface elasticity can be boiled down to one question. Does stretching the surface of a soft solid change its surface tension? In 2017\, Xu et. al designed an experiment in which the opening angle of a wetting ridge was a proxy to evidence a dramatic increase of surface tension with stretch. In 2019\, however\, Masurel et al. claimed that the coupling between nonlinear mechanics and the singular nature of the wetting ridge suffice to explain the behavior of the opening angle observed by Xu et al\, without invoking the Shuttleworth effect. The question therefore remains open. This presentation will focus on an experimental setup with no geometric singularity\, that leaves no doubt on the existence or absence of surface elasticity in soft solids\, hopefully closing this long-lasting controversy.\n\n\n \n\nZoom link: https://espci.zoom.us/j/88601490160?pwd=Z0FjcWdxOGJpRGc1MXJ1UVQrL2didz09\nID: 886 0149 0160\nCode secret : 473603

DESCRIPTION:Theory of superconductivity due to Ngai’s mechanism in lightly doped SrTiO3 \n  \nBy M. V. Feigel’man\nL.D. Landau Institute for Theoretical Physics\, Chernogolovka\, Russia\nSkolkov Institute of Physics and Technology\, Moscow\,Russia \n  \nWe develop a theory of superconducting pairing in low-density Strontium titanate due to quadratic coupling of electron density to soft transverse optical phonons. It leads to static attractive potential between electrons which decay length scales inversely with soft optical gap. For low electron densities attraction between electrons is local and transition temperature Tc was found. The Tc(n) dependence in agreement with experimental data for low doping was calculated. Next\, we show that suppression of Tc by hydrostatic pressure and strong increase of Tc due to isotopic substitution are explained within our theory. \n  \nZoom link: https://espci.zoom.us/j/84838212479?pwd=ZE05ekpuNHRYYjJMVFAyUHg1TnQ1QT09\nID: 848 3821 2479\nPassword: LevLandau\nContact/to subscribe or unsubscribe: seminaires-lpem@espci.fr

DESCRIPTION:Well-defined Low-valent Cobalt complexes: Simpler and Easier to understand ?\nMarc Petit \nSorbonne Université\n \nWhere ? ESPCI Paris\, escalier C\, niveau 3\, salle Cellule\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn this presentation we will discusses about two main themes\, the common thread of which is organometallic catalysis with cobalt. One focuses on the activation of E-H bonds (with E = C\, Si\, B\, H …) followed by the functionalization of unsaturated compounds using well-defined low-valent cobalt complexes. The other is focused on the synthesis of nano-objects by organometallic route and their applications in catalysis and in the field of energy. The major concern common to these themes is the design and use of simple\, well-defined\, easy-to-access catalytic systems that can be used without adding additives and are reproducible. This work is based on the understanding of reaction mechanisms\, whether in catalysis but also in the growth of nano-objects.\n\n\n\n \n

SUMMARY:Séminaire Programme Gradué Chimie PSL
DESCRIPTION:Emergent phenomena in photosynthesis as an opportunity for improved yields and sensing of plants\n  \nLadislav Nedbal\nInstitute of Bio- and Geosciences/Plant Sciences (IBG-2)\nForschungszentrum Jülich\, D-52428 Jülich\, Germany \n  \nLadislav Nedbal studied theoretical solid-state biophysics\, graduated from the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics\, Charles University\, Prague with Vladislav Čápek\, and did his Ph.D. in the Institute of Microbiology CAS\, Třeboň on photoinhibition of photosynthesis with Ivan Šetlík. During his postdoctoral work in U.Wageningen\, Netherlands\, University of Illinois\, USA\, and ENS Paris\, France he continued studying the biophysics of photosynthesis. He founded a successful\, globally acting company and designed several unique instruments\, including fluorometers and bioreactors for the cultivation of algal biomass. As a member of the Mission Advisory Group\, he participated in preparing the FLEX satellite that will be launched by ESA in 2024. He did his research as a senior scientist in various institutes in the Czech Republic\, at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem\, and\, in the last decade\, at the Forschungszentrum Jülich\, Helmholtz Gemeinschaft in Germany. Currently he serves as a visiting professor at the Département de chimie\, École normale supérieure\, PSL University\, Sorbonne Université\, CNRS. \n  \nPhotosynthesis is the major sun-powered driver of carbon\, oxygen\, nitrogen\, and phosphorus global cycles that maintains the composition of our atmosphere and waters\, stabilizes the global climate\, and provides food and clean water for humankind. The green revolution in the 1960s temporarily reduced hunger in the underprivileged parts of the world by the use of new high-yielding varieties of crops and by the use of new fertilizers and agrochemicals. These enormous benefits brought\, with a delay\, new challenges that will be confronting generations in the 21st century: the global overpopulation and increasing per capita consumption is behind the global change that will cause a new divergence between rich and poor and between the generations. Photosynthesis producing more while significantly reducing cost and load on the environment may allow for more time for scientific\, economic\, and social adaptation in the rapidly changing world. Combining photosynthesis with photovoltaics\, adapting plants to the changing climatic conditions\, using urban environments for local production\, photosynthesis-driven local nutrient cycles from wastewater to soil and crop are often seen as good opportunities.\n \nI shall concentrate in my lecture on our quest for improving photosynthesis yields and for improved sensing of photosynthetic performance by controlled dynamic illumination. We found that the response to harmonically modulated irradiance is highly non-linear\, an emergent phenomenon that will be illustrated by an analogy to a musical instrument. The non-linear response is\, in part\, due to the intrinsic regulatory controls within the plants that are modulated and dependent on the frequency of the sinusoidal light. Identifying frequencies that may lead to less regulatory losses for plant biomass\, or higher production of\, e.g.\, high-value secondary metabolites is one of our goals\, together\, with finding frequencies for remote sensing of regulation and plant stress in fields\, greenhouses\, and urban cultivation systems to be developed.\n \nWe have also shown that sensing photosynthesis in the frequency domain as a response to the periodic harmonically modulated light rather than during dark-to-light transition removes the need for dark adaptation and leads to a higher signal-to-noise ratio\, both fundamentally important in field and greenhouses. By use of photosynthetic mutants\, we have also proved that frequency-domain sensing can identify specific regulatory interactions and can narrow their kinetic characterization. In collaboration with ENS\, we aim at falsification of present mathematical models of the reaction kinetics and at the development of new models that will unveil the potential of non-linear networks for increased photosynthetic yields.    \n   \nLink : https://us02web.zoom.us/j/81520058748?pwd=VXVkalBFR0Z3Rm5CeU54NnEwYzZlQT09\nPassword : 083850\nMeeting ID : 815 2005 8748
