SUMMARY:Séminaire Programme Gradué Chimie PSL
DESCRIPTION:Friday the 3rd of July\, 11:00 Amphithéâtre Holweck\, Phosphorylation as a Central Enabler in Origins of Life Research by Pr Ram Krishnamurthy.\n\n\nProfessor Ramanarayanan Krishnamurthy is a Professor of Chemistry at Scripps Research\, where he investigates the chemical origins of life and the transition from prebiotic chemistry to early biological systems. His work has advanced major hypotheses on how early Earth chemistry could have produced nucleic acids\, amino acids\, protometabolic networks\, and protocell-like compartments. He is also a co-leader of NASA’s Prebiotic Chemistry and Early Earth Environments Consortium\, which studies how planetary conditions may give rise to life’s chemistry. His key achievements include pioneering work on diamidophosphate-mediated RNA/DNA chemistry\, cyanide-driven protometabolic pathways\, and prebiotically plausible protocell formation.

SUMMARY:Séminaire Programme Gradué Chimie PSL
DESCRIPTION:Maria Carolina O. Aguiar\, Thursday July 2 at 2:00 pm (Paris time)\, Room Charpak\, at LPEM in hybrid format:Formation of charge and spin ordering in interacting one-dimensional systems during and after quantum quenches by Maria Carolina O. AguiarDepartamento de Física\, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais\, Belo Horizonte\, MG\, BrazilIn recent work by my group\, we aim at investigating the emergence of charge and spin orderings within the extended Hubbard model during and after quantum quenches. We use the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group method to describe the dynamics.Starting from the non-interacting disordered state\, we track its time evolution as electronic interactions increase over a finite time\, eventually reaching final values in the charge density wave or spin density wave phase. These final values are considered for the free evolution of the system after the quench. According to the rate at which we turn on the electronic interactions during the quench\, we identify three temporal regimes: abrupt\, intermediate\, and adiabatic [1]. Systems subject to the adiabatic regime follow the instantaneous ground state during the quench and remain stable in the post-quench analysis\, while those subject to abrupt changes do not present ordering during or after the quench. In between\, in the intermediate case\, after a significant increase during the quench\, the order parameters exhibit oscillatory behavior in the post-quench\, also observed in the entanglement entropy and the fidelity between states. Exact diagonalization analyses of small chains show that these oscillations arise from coherent superpositions within the low-energy spectrum of the Hamiltonian governing the post-quench dynamics.[1] Isaac M. SUMMARY:Séminaire Programme Gradué Chimie PSL
DESCRIPTION:Ranabir Dey from IIT Hyderabad\, Université de Bordeaux. The title of Ranabir’s talk is:** How self-propelling microswimmers adapt to complex confined environments **\n\nOutline: Biological microswimmers have developed various locomotion strategies and responses to adapt to changes in their local environments. For example\, bacteria\, algae\, and sperm cells alter their locomotion in confined environments\, like near walls\, interfaces\, pores and corners\, resulting in circular trajectories\, geometry-guided motion\, trapping\, and accumulation.  In this seminar\, we show that self-propelling artificial microswimmers also exhibit autonomous changes in their motility to adapt to local complex environments\, by considering self-propelling active droplets as a model system.\n\nFirst\, we demonstrate the fascinating emergence of run-and-tumble-like motility in active droplets with increasing softness of the walls in strong confinements. We connect such emergent swimming dynamics in a soft microchannel to the underlying alterations in chemo-hydrodynamics using fluorescence microscopy techniques and boundary integral method-based numerical simulations. Next\, we demonstrate how self-propelling microswimmers adapt to confined liquid-air and liquid-liquid meniscus corners- ubiquitous elements of natural and engineered environments. Combining experiments\, theory and simulations\, we show that pusher-type microswimmers are attracted towards a meniscus corner\, followed by transient trapping and eventual escape. We further map the dependence of swimming trajectories on the microswimmer type\, the corner geometry\, and the viscosity ratio across the liquid interface.\n\nUnderstanding these alterations in swimming strategy for artificial microswimmers (model systems) serves two main purposes- one\, it provides insights into the fluid dynamical aspects of the underlying adaptation mechanisms for biological microswimmers by circumventing the biological complexity; two\, it helps in planning a roadmap for using artificial microswimmers like active droplets as state-of-the-art autonomous\, microrobots in many biotechnology/biomedical applications.\n\nReferences:\n\n\n[1] Sontakke\, S. SUMMARY:Le Grand Procès du Recyclage - Tribunal pour les Générations Futures

SUMMARY:Séminaire Programme Gradué Chimie PSL
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to invite you to our next seminar\, in the IPGG amphitheater\, on Thursday\, June 18\, 2026 at 3 pm. \n\n\n\n\nPlease note that it is part of a thematic day jointly organized with Thermo\, « Unlocking deeper insights across Omics and Biopharma — Bringing ASMS 2026 news to your lab. » Full-day attendance requires free registration for logistical/organizational purposes. The full program is below\, at the end of this message. \n\n\nMass spectrometry –based proteomics and metabolomics unveil metabolic vulnerabilities of cancer cells Angela Bachi\, IFOM ETS – The AIRC Institute of Molecular Oncology\, Milan\, ItalyLipid metabolism is often deregulated in cancer. Indeed\, enhanced lipid synthesis\, storage\, and uptake contribute to cancer proliferation\, survival\, invasion\, and metastasis¹. The rewiring of lipid metabolism in cancer has been linked to the activation of oncogenic signaling pathways as well as to crosstalk with the tumor microenvironment²; however\, the mechanism by which cancer cells become addicted to lipids remains largely unknown. Through comparative analysis of proteins secreted by metastatic and primary melanoma cell lines\, our group recently found that BACE2 shedding activity is linked to the secretion of proteins related to lipid metabolism. From global lipidomic profiles of melanoma cell lines obtained using an in-house optimized LC-MS method\, Opti-nQL⁴\, we found that metastatic melanoma cells — which express higher levels of BACE2 than the primary ones — are enriched in cholesterol and triglycerides and accumulate lipid droplets. By proteomic analysis\, we detected increased expression of enzymes involved in cholesterol and fatty acid regulation. As BACE2 is a sheddase\, we focused on its specific role and\, through spatial proteomics and N-terminomics\, discovered that BACE2 regulates the level of lipid transporters at the membrane\, tuning lipid uptake from the extracellular space⁵. Our study reveals the role of BACE2 as a modulator of lipid metabolism in cancer.References:1 Xueli Bian\, Rui Liu\, Ying Meng\, Dongming Xing\, Daqian Xu\, Zhimin Lu; Lipid metabolism and cancer. SUMMARY:Séminaire Programme Gradué Chimie PSL
DESCRIPTION:Paul Chaikin\, professor at NYU\, with the support of the Joliot Chair. Paul will give a seminar Thursday\, June 11\, in amphi Charpak at 3:00 p.m. \nOn Some small steps toward artificial Life. Abstract: Self-replication and evolution under selective pressure are inherent phenomena in life\, but few artificial systems exhibit these phenomena. We have designed a process and a system of DNA origami tiles that exponentially replicate a seed pattern\, doubling (or more) the copies in each diurnal-like cycle of temperature and UV illumination\, producing more than 6 million copies in 12 cycles with no enzymes or polymerases.  We demonstrate environmental selection and competition. We also use DNA origami to self-assemble nano-micro machines that use oligonucleotides for fuel\, and we make transcription modules for sensing and communication.

DESCRIPTION:Thursday June 11 at 2:00 pm (Paris time)\, Room Boreau\, building C\, 2nd floor\, 10 rue Vauquelin\, ESPCI\, at LPEM in hybrid format. : \nNanophotonic Metasurfaces: VO2 Phase Control and qBIC-Enhanced Non-Reciprocity by Antonio García-Martín\, Instituto de Micro y Nanotecnología IMN-CNM\, CSIC (CEI UAM+CSIC)\, Isaac Newton 8\, E-28760 Tres Cantos\,  Madrid\, Spain. ‎In this presentation I will address engineered metasurfaces involving external tuning via vanadium dioxide (VO2) and non-reciprocal enhancement via quasi-bound states in the continuum (qBICs). VO2 exhibits a notable insulator-to-metal transition at 68°C with a dramatic change in electrical resistivity\, enabling applications in photodetection and bolometry. Two VO2-based           systems are examined: arrays of gold (Au) nanodisks embedded in VO2 thin films to reduce the laser power needed for phase transition by 30% through localized plasmonic field enhancement[1]; and perforated Au films with sub-micron slits on VO2 to enable temperature-controlled reflectance modulation from 90% to 10%\, acting as optical valves[2].In parallel\, qBIC phenomena in tilted silicon (Si) nanodisks and n-doped indium antimonide (InSb) micropillar metasurfaces are investigated. Overlapping dipolar resonances produce dark and asymmetric qBICs at modified Brewster angles\, resulting in cloaked excitation with strong near-field enhancement and minimal reflection[3]. In magneto-optical InSb metasurfaces under external magnetic fields\, qBICs enhance non-reciprocal cross-polarization coupling\, tunable via structural tilting. These effects facilitate low-power\, tunable optical switching and amplified magneto-optical responses[4].Together\, these studies demonstrate how structural design\, resonance hybridization\, and external stimuli such as temperature and magnetic fields enable novel\, tunable nanophotonic devices with enhanced light–matter interactions.lsite[1] Z. SUMMARY:Séminaire Programme Gradué Chimie PSL
DESCRIPTION: Monday\,  8th of June at 11:30\, we have the pleasure to listen to Laura Alvarez from CRPP\, Université de Bordeaux. The title of Mark’s talk is:** Non-equilibrium soft matter: from active colloids to synthetic cells **and the abstract is below. This seminar will take place at the seminar room of Gulliver C1.62  at 11:30. Living cells operate far from equilibrium\, converting energy dissipation into motion\, shapechanges\, transport and adaptive responses. Reproducing such behaviours in minimal syntheticsystems is a central challenge in soft matter physics\, both to identify the physical ingredientsrequired for life-like dynamics and to design functional microscopic materials [1].In this talk\, I will discuss our approach to non-equilibrium soft matter\, moving from active colloidsto deformable\, cell-inspired compartments. I will first give a brief overview of hard active colloidsas minimal platforms to program motility under external fields. These systems provide usefulmodel experiments to understand how activity\, confinement and crowding control transport andorganization at the microscale [3\,4].I will then focus on giant unilamellar vesicles driven out of equilibrium. In contrast to rigid colloids\,lipid vesicles present a powerful minimal models of synthetic cells\, where the membrane is notonly a passive boundary but a material layer that controls dynamical states\, enabling the engineeringof life-like non-equilibrium behaviors [2]. I will present our recent results on active Janus GUVsunder external actuation\, including run-and-tumble-like dynamics emerging from the couplingbetween propulsion and phase-separated lipid membranes [5]. I will further discuss how electricfields and light can induce controlled deformations\, protrusions and division-like events [6\,7].Together\, these results show how non-equilibrium lipid compartments can bridge active matterand synthetic cell research\, providing a route toward microscopic systems that not only move\, butalso reconfigure\, deform and execute cell-like physical functions.[1] G.Volpe\, N. DESCRIPTION:Friday April 3 at 2:00 pm (Paris time)\,  Room Charpak\, entrance building\, ground floor: \nMagneto-optical spectroscopy on van-der-Waals antiferromagnets and topological semimetals\, by F. Le Mardelé\, Laboratoire national des champs magnétiques intenses\, Toulouse.  \nMagneto-optical spectroscopy focuses on the interaction between light and matter\,with the magnetic field acting as a continuously adjustable external parameter. The magneto-optic response offers valuable information into the intrinsic properties of systems in their unperturbed states. As a historical example\, Landau-level spectroscopy has provided crucial insights into the electronic band structure of semiconductors and semimetals [1]. I will illustrate this point with my recent study on the low-energy excitations of TlBiSSe\, a textbook Dirac semimetal. Following this\, I will highlight the important role that magneto-optic plays in the ongoing research of van der Waals magnets. Specifically\, I will discuss the detection of a novel type of collective excitation\, called longitudinal magnons in FePSe3 and FePS3 followed by the study of the magnetic alloy Fe1−xNixPS3 in which magneto-optics allows us to track precisely the evolution of the magnetic properties with respect to the alloy composition.  \n[1] G. SUMMARY:Séminaire Programme Gradué Chimie PSL
DESCRIPTION:Strain-responsive mechanical properties of polymeric materials\, Koichi Mayumi\nThe Institute for Solid State Physics\, The University of Tokyo\, Kashiwa\, Chiba 277-8581\, Japan\n\nPolymeric materials that exhibit strain-responsive mechanical properties are attracting increasing attention as a class of adaptive and functional materials capable of dynamically adjusting their behavior under external deformation. In such systems\, mechanical characteristics such as stiffness\, strength\, and energy dissipation evolve in response to applied strain\, often driven by reversible changes in molecular conformation\, network architecture\, or intermolecular interactions. Understanding and controlling these strain-coupled processes enable the design of polymers with tunable and programmable mechanical performance\, which are promising for applications in soft robotics\, flexible electronics\, and biomedical devices. In the seminar\, I will introduce several topics on the strain-responsive mechanical properties of polymeric materials: (i) tough and elastic polymer gels reinforced by strain-induced crystallization\, (ii) shear-induced gelation of polymer/nanoparticle solutions\, (iii) fracture of cross-linked epoxy resins with different network structures. \nRecently\, we have successfully developed tough polymer gels utilizing strain-induced crystallization (SIC) [1-6]. In order to realize SIC in polymer gels\, the polymer chain orientation under stretching should be homogeneous. We have discovered that SIC occurs in polymer gels with homogeneous polymer networks and sufficiently high polymer concentrations: slide-ring (SR) hydro gels [1]\, SR ion gels [2\, 3]\, Tri-branched PEG gels [4]\, and Tetra-branched PEG gels [5]. From in-situ wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) experiments on the gels under repeated tensile deformation\, we found that nanocrystals of PEG in the gels forms at large strains and disappears quickly when applied stress is reduced. The reversible strain-induced crystallization yields the high toughness and elasticity. A similar concept can be applied to bio-based polysaccharide hydrogels to improve their mechanical toughness [7]. \n \nReferences:\n[1] Liu C.\, Morimoto N.\, Jiang L.\, Kawahara S.\, Noritomi T.\, Yokoyama H.\, Mayumi K.*\, Ito K.* Science 2021\, 372\, 1078.\n[2] Hashimoto K.\, Shiwaku T.\, Aoki H.\, Yokoyama H.\, Mayumi K.*\, Ito K.* Sci. DESCRIPTION:Thursday March 19 at 2:00 pm (Paris time)\,Room Holweck\, building C\, 1st floor\, 10 rue Vauquelin\, ESPCI\, at LPEM in hybrid format:The power of flatness: an ab initio guide to tunable flat bands in 2D materials\n\n\n\n\nby Ludovica Zullo\, Wuerzburg University.Abstract: In condensed matter\, flatness is anything but boring: when a band’s energy dispersion becomes nearly flat\, electrons lose their kinetic identity and correlations take over\, giving rise to exotic physics. In this talk\, I will show how to design two-dimensional materials in which flat bands may be engineered and tuned through experimentally accessible « control knobs » including strain\, dimensionality interplay\, twisting\, and heterostructure stacking.I will show how to manipulate different platforms to unlock the power of flat bands physics: for example magnetic ordering in strained kagome lattices [1]\, emergent superconductivity in otherwise non-superconducting transition-metal dichalcogenides whitin incommensurate heterostructures [2]\, twist-tunable spin textures [3]\, and the delicate interplay between one-dimensional charge-density waves and two-dimensional interactions in rectangular lattices [4].  These examples illustrate how controlling flatness via ab initio predictions transforms materials into laboratories for emergent quantum phenomena for future devices applications.[1] G. SUMMARY:Séminaire Programme Gradué Chimie PSL
DESCRIPTION:We will have the pleasure to host Mohammad RAEF (University of the Basque Country EHU\, Spain) for a SIMM seminar next week Thursday February 26 at 2 pm inSalle Nobélium (note the peculiar seminar room). The title of Mohammad’s talk is « Polylactide Stereocomplexation: Controlled Crystallization and Functionality in Soft Polymeric Materials« .\n\nPolylactide Stereocomplexation: Controlled Crystallization and Functionality in Soft Polymeric Materials\n\nPolylactide (PLA) stereocomplexation provides a robust route to engineer polymer properties through stereoselective interactions\, controlled crystallization\, and hierarchical self-assembly. The association of enantiomeric poly(L-lactide) and poly(D-lactide) chains leads to stereocomplex crystals with a distinct triclinic structure\, high packing density\, and melting temperatures approximately 50 K higher than those of conventional PLA homocrystals. These characteristics position stereocomplexed PLA as a model soft-matter system\, in which molecular structure and chain dynamics directly translate into macroscopic performance. In this seminar\, stereocomplexation is discussed as a kinetically governed crystallization process competing with homocrystallization\, rather than as a purely thermodynamic outcome. The influence of molecular weight\, chain entanglements\, processing history\, shear fields\, thermal protocols\, and interfacial interactions on stereocomplex formation is examined. Particular attention is given to how copolymerization\, selective nucleation\, and multifunctional fillers reshape the crystallization landscape\, enabling stereocomplex formation in high-molecular-weight and processing-relevant systems. Beyond enhanced thermal stability\, stereocomplex domains act as physical crosslinks and volume-excluding phases that strongly affect chain mobility\, mechanical reinforcement\, degradation kinetics\, and transport phenomena. These effects open extended application potential for stereocomplexed PLA in areas requiring dimensional stability\, heat resistance\, controlled degradability\, and multifunctionality\, including advanced packaging\, biomedical devices\, sustainable composites\, and functional soft materials. More broadly\, stereocomplexation offers design principles relevant to soft matter science\, linking confinement\, interfacial crystallization\, and multiscale structure–property relationships. By framing PLA stereocomplexation as a tunable platform for controlled crystallization\, this seminar highlights its relevance beyond biodegradable polymers\, with implications for the rational design of high-performance and sustainable polymeric materials.\n\nKeywords: Stereocomplexation\, polymer crystallization\, thermomechanical performance\, sustainable polymers\, structure-property relationship\n\nReference : Stereocomplexation: from molecular structure to functionality of advanced polylactide systems\, Polymer 2023\, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.polymer.2023.126066.

SUMMARY:Séminaire Programme Gradué Chimie PSL
DESCRIPTION:Thursday February 26 at 2:00 pm (Paris time)\, Room Holweck\, building C\, 1st floor\, 10 rue Vauquelin\, ESPCI\, at LPEM in hybrid format: Electronic Structure of 2D Metal Halide Perovskites: Impact of Ligands on Octahedral Twists\, Energy Gaps and Exciton Binding Energy\, by Antoine Kahn\, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering\, Princeton Univ.\, Princeton\, USA. Two-dimensional (2D) halide perovskites exhibit remarkable tunability of optoelectronic properties and good environmental stability achieved through the selection of both inorganic and organic constituents. In particular\, the incorporation of bifunctional ligands featuring non-ammonium terminus and functional groups capable of forming extra bonding motifs within the organic bilayer provides an effective strategy to engineer perovskite structures and introduce additional functionalities. This talk addresses the determination of optoelectronic properties\, i.e. single particle gap (EG) and exciton binding energy (EB)\, in several groups of Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) and Dion-Jacobson (DJ) 2D metal halide perovskites via electron spectroscopy (UPS/IPES) aided by density functional theory (DFT). We first determine the electronic gap progression as a function of inorganic layer thickness in high purity films of BA2MAn-1PbnI3n+1 (n = 1-5).[1] By subtracting the optical from the electronic gap\, we show that EB vs. n ranges from 420 meV (n = 1) down to 100 meV (n = 5)\, well fitted by the empirical scaling law developed by Blancon et al.[2] We then turn to DJ and RP perovskites incorporating organic symmetric vs. asymmetric ligands (BDA vs. DMPD) and ligands with diverse functional groups (-CN\, -OH\, -COOH\, -Ph\, and -CH3)\, each exhibiting distinct bonding characteristics and dielectric properties\, and report on the impact of these ligands on the electronic and excitonic properties of these 2D perovskites.[3\,4] These bifunctional ligands featuring non-ammonium terminus and functional groups form extra bonding motifs within the organic bilayer and provide an effective strategy to engineer perovskite structures and introduce additional functionalities. Overall\, these results provide deeper insight into the complex impact of organic ligands on the electronic and excitonic properties of 2D perovskites\, in particular the substantial role of interlayer electronic coupling. [1]    X.
